Kaimū, Hawaii

Kaimū was a small town in the Puna District on Island of Hawaiʻi that was completely destroyed by an eruptive flow of lava from the Kūpaʻianahā vent of the Kīlauea volcano in 1990. In Hawaiian, kai mū means "gathering [at the] sea" as to watch surfing. The lava flow that destroyed Kaimū and nearby Kalapana erupted from the southeast rift zone of Kīlauea. Kaimū was located on Kaimū Bay.

Kalapana, Hawaii

Kalapana is a town and region in the Puna District on the Island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Islands and can be reached either by Hawaii Route 130 from Pāhoa or by Hawaii Route 137. The area gained notoriety when the 1986 Kīlauea lava flow from the Kūpaʻianahā vent destroyed and partly buried most of the town, as well as Kalapana Gardens and nearby Royal Gardens subdivisions. The lava flow that destroyed Kalapana erupted from the southeast rift zone of Kīlauea.

Wao Kele o Puna

Wao Kele O Puna (Wao Kele) is Hawaiʻi's largest remaining lowland wet forest, about 15 mi south of the city of Hilo, along the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi. The name means the upland rainforest of Puna. Puna is one of 9 districts on the island. Lava from Kīlauea continues to flow onto forest land. In 2006, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) purchased Wao Kele, ending a twenty-year struggle to prevent tapping the sizeable geothermal energy resources that lie below it.

Puna is one of the nine districts in Hawaiʻi County, Big Island, Hawaii. The District of Puna is located on the easternmost portion of the island and shares borders to the north with the District of South Hilo and a border to the west with the District of Kaʻū. With its size of just under 320,000 acres, Puna is slightly smaller than the island of Kauaʻi.
