It is named for Colonel Isaac Cox of Pennsylvania, who built a "fort" (actually an "old time block house") at the site in April 1775 before he fought in the American Revolutionary War, with the help of his brother James Cox.

This airport is included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2009–2013, which categorized it as a general aviation facility. The airport is run by the Bardstown-Nelson County Air Board, which consists six members: half appointed by Bardstown and half by Nelson County.
