The county is named for Captain John Simpson, a Kentucky militia officer who fought in Battle of Fallen Timbers in the Northwest Indian War, and was killed during the War of 1812 in the Battle of River Raisin. It is a limited dry county.

Lost River Cave
Lost River Cave is seven-mile cave system with a river running through it. It is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, an hour drive from Nashville, Tennessee and a two-hour drive from Louisville, Kentucky. Western Kentucky University shares the 68 acres of property with Lost River Cave. Visitors have been taking boat tours through certain portions of the cave since 1998. It is the only underground boat tour offered in Kentucky.
