Knox County, Kentucky

Knox County is a county located near the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2010, the population was 31,883. Its county seat is Barbourville. The county is named for General Henry Knox. It is a prohibition or dry county, with the exception of the portion of the city of Corbin that lies within Knox County. The city had voted in 2006 to allow sales of alcohol by the drink in qualifying restaurants, and then approved full retail sales in 2012.

WKLB 104.5FM & 1290AM is a radio station broadcasting a Rock & Country Music format. Licensed to Manchester, Kentucky, USA. The station is owned by Barker Broadcasting Company, and features programing from Fox News Radio and the Kentucky News Network. In 1983 WKLB received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to increase its power to 5000 watts making it one of the most powerful AM radio stations in the Kentucky Mountains.

Union College (Kentucky)

Union College is a four-year private college located in Barbourville, Kentucky. The college, founded in 1879, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Union College is a small liberal arts college in the Appalachian Mountains. Barbourville was a thriving and progressive town of 450 citizens and three brick buildings at the time of the college's establishment. Union's approximately 1200 undergraduate and graduate students represent 23 states and many countries.

Battle of Barbourville

The Battle of Barbourville was one of the early engagements of the American Civil War. It took place on September 19, 1861, in Knox County, Kentucky during the campaign known as the Kentucky Confederate Offensive. The battle is considered the first Confederate victory in the commonwealth, and threw a scare into Federal commanders, who rushed troops to central Kentucky to try to repel the invasion, which was finally stopped at the Battle of Camp Wildcat in October.
