Cancienne Plantation, Louisiana, also known as Hard Times Plantation was bought by Leo Seprien Cancienne after he had inherited money. He had started working on the plantation for laborer's wage. It is said that when his oldest son, John, asked him what he would name his new plantation, he answered, "I've seen so much hard times working here that I should call it 'Hardtimes'.
