St. Joseph, Louisiana

St. Joseph is a town in and the parish seat of Tensas Parish in northeastern Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,340 at the 2000 census, but it declined by 12.2 percent to 1,176 in 2010. The African American majority increased from 69 percent in 2000 to 77.4 percent in 2010. Unique for the Deep South, St. Joseph was planned and constructed along New England-style village green. The downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tensas Parish, Louisiana

Tensas Parish (French: Paroisse des Tensas) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The seat of the parish is St. Joseph. In 2010, the population of Tensas Parish was 5,252; it is the least-populous of all sixty-four parishes. The 2011 estimated population declined again—to 5,066 persons. Tensas Parish is 56 percent African American. The name Tensas is derived from the Taensa people.

Lake Bruin

Lake Bruin is an ox-bow lake of the Mississippi River located in Tensas Parish in northeastern Louisiana. It consists of some 3,000 acres of unusually clear water, particularly suited for swimming, boating, and fishing. Part of the lake is owned by the state, which operates Lake Bruin State Park, one of nineteen Louisiana state parks.

Alcorn State University

Alcorn State University is a historically black comprehensive land-grant institution in Lorman, Mississippi. It was founded in 1871 by the Reconstruction era legislature to provide higher education for freedmen. It was the first black land grant college in the United States. The university is counted as a census-designated place and had a resident population of 1,017 at the 2010 census. Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist, graduated in 1948 from here.
