Battle of Champion Hill

The Battle of Champion Hill, or Bakers Creek, fought May 16, 1863, was the pivotal battle in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. Union commander Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee pursued the retreating Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton and defeated his army twenty miles to the east of Vicksburg, Mississippi, leading inevitably to the Siege of Vicksburg and surrender.

Hinds County, Mississippi

Hinds County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area and bordered on the north by the Yazoo River, which marks the southern edge of the Mississippi Delta. In the nineteenth century, it was developed for cotton plantations. Hinds County is named for General Thomas Hinds, a hero of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. As of 2010, the population was 245,285. Its county seats are Jackson and Raymond.
