Satartia, Mississippi

Satartia is a village in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 68 at the 2000 census. Satartia is an American Indian word for pumpkin or "pumpkin patch," rumored to be due to the small gourds that grow around the area. It was founded in the mid-19th century and was famous for the Satartia Rifles, a civil war regiment and recruitment group. Currently there are two small country grocery stores and a cotton processing gin.

Sunflower River

The Sunflower River (also known as the Big Sunflower River) is one of the main tributaries of the Yazoo River in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is navigable by barge for 50 miles. It rises in De Soto County, Mississippi near the Tennessee border and flows south for 100 miles to the Yazoo River. At Clarksdale on its banks, the annual Sunflower River Blues and Gospel festival is held. The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains a navigation channel, thirty miles in length.

Bentonia is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 500 at the 2000 census. Some blues scholars maintain that there is a "Bentonia School" of blues singing and guitar-playing, and that "Bentonia-style" is a distinct style of delta blues, but Bentonia lies outside the Mississippi Delta proper.

Yazoo County, Mississippi

Yazoo County is a county located in the Mississippi Delta region of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2010, the population was 28,065. The county seat is Yazoo City. It is named for the Yazoo River, whose name, legend has it, comes from an Indian word meaning "River of Death. " Farming and lumber are the predominant industries of Yazoo County. The Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Yazoo County.
