Satartia, Mississippi

Satartia is a village in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 68 at the 2000 census. Satartia is an American Indian word for pumpkin or "pumpkin patch," rumored to be due to the small gourds that grow around the area. It was founded in the mid-19th century and was famous for the Satartia Rifles, a civil war regiment and recruitment group. Currently there are two small country grocery stores and a cotton processing gin.

Sunflower River

The Sunflower River (also known as the Big Sunflower River) is one of the main tributaries of the Yazoo River in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is navigable by barge for 50 miles. It rises in De Soto County, Mississippi near the Tennessee border and flows south for 100 miles to the Yazoo River. At Clarksdale on its banks, the annual Sunflower River Blues and Gospel festival is held. The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains a navigation channel, thirty miles in length.

Battle of Snyder's Bluff

The Battle of Snyder's Bluff was fought from April 29 to May 1, 1863, during the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. Union forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman conducted a feint against Confederate units holding the bluff, which was easily repelled. To ensure that troops were not withdrawn to Grand Gulf to assist Confederates there, a combined Union Army-Navy force feigned an attack on Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi. After noon on April 29, Lt. Cdr. K.
