Pontotoc is a city in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, located to the west of the much larger city of Tupelo. The population was 5,625 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pontotoc County. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of Hanging Grapes". The famous outlaws Jesse and Frank James and their gang once hid at an old house which was used as a Union Army hospital during the Battle of Harrisburg or Battle of Tupelo.

Pontotoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2010, the population was 29,957. Its county seat is Pontotoc. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes". The county is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi, Micropolitan Statistical Area. The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc county.

Trace State Park
For the Tennessee state park, see Natchez Trace State Park. Trace State Park, also known as Old Natchez Trace Park, is a state park in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is located off Mississippi Highway 6 near the hamlet of Furrs, about halfway between Pontotoc and Tupelo. It is named after the nearby Natchez Trace Parkway and the historic Natchez Trace. Historic figure Davy Crockett once lived within the area bounded by the park.
