Fort Mitchell, Nebraska

Fort Mitchell, Nebraska was an Army fort in service from 1864-1867, located in present-day Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. First constructed northwest of Mitchell Pass as Camp Shuman, Fort Mitchell was manned in the autumn of 1864 by Company "H" of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry under Captain J. S. Shuman. Mitchell Pass

Mitchell Pass is a gap through the Wildcat Hills near Scottsbluff, Nebraska, immediately south of Scotts Bluff and directly west of Gering, Nebraska. After 1851 it replaced Robidoux Pass as the preferred route through the hills on the Emigrant Trail, as it eliminated a detour to the south more distant from the route North Platte River. A branch of Nebraska Highway 92 passes through the gap.
