Boonton Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 4,263, reflecting a decline of 24 (-0.6%) from the 4,287 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 721 (+20.2%) from the 3,566 counted in the 1990 Census. Boonton Township was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11, 1867, from portions of Pequannock Township.

The town was originally called "Boone-Towne" in 1761 in honor of the Colonial Governor Thomas Boone.

Boonton Iron Works
The Boonton Iron Works were founded about 1770 by Samuel Ogden who, with others in his family, purchased a 6-acre tract along the Rockaway River, near Boonton, New Jersey, United States. Here rolling and slitting mills were erected that engaged in the manufacture of nail rods and bar iron. With the construction of the Morris Canal in 1830, the New Jersey Iron Company was organized. This company built a new plant costing $283,000 and imported skilled mechanics from England.
