Shandaken Tunnel

The Shandaken Tunnel is a tunnel in Eastern New York State, part of the New York City water supply system. It was constructed between 1916 and 1924. The aqueduct starts in Gilboa, New York at the Schoharie Reservoir, which is in the counties of Schoharie, Delaware, and Greene. The water flows south towards the Esopus Creek in Ulster County. It finally empties into a man-made pool in Allaben, New York, within the Town of Shandaken, and enters Esopus Creek there.

Shandaken, New York

Shandaken is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 3,085. The name is from a native phrase for "land of rapid waters. " The Town of Shandaken is located on the county's northern border. Shandaken is northwest of Kingston, New York. Shandaken is also the home of Timber Lake Camp, one of the more prominent summer camps in the Northeast region.

Chichester, New York

The hamlet of Chichester, New York, formerly referred to as Chichesterville, is one of the northernmost communities in the town of Shandaken, New York, being right next to the borderline between Ulster County and Greene County. The hamlet of Chichester, New York, is not to be confused with the city in West Sussex, England. One difference is that unlike the city of Chichester, England, the "i" in Chichester, New York, is pronounced like "eye" instead of a vowel sound such as in the word "chip".

Phoenicia, New York

Phoenicia is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 309 at the 2010 census. Phoenicia is located in the northeast part of Town of Shandaken, on Route 28. It is the largest community in the town. The village is located on Route 28, right at the junction with Route 214, and is next to Esopus Creek.

Big Indian Railroad Station

The station at Big Indian, MP 36.4, was another Ulster and Delaware Railroad station. It served the town of Big Indian, New York, and was at the bottom of the Pine Hill Grade. At this stop, a second or third locomotive was coupled to the train to help it up the grade to Grand Hotel Station. A water tower was located here along with a turntable for turning steam locomotives. This station saw its last train in 1954, when the station was closed down and abandoned.
