Parkway Playhouse

The Parkway Playhouse, located in Burnsville, North Carolina, is the oldest continually operating summer theater in North Carolina. It was established in 1947 by W.R. Taylor, a professor of drama from the Woman's College of North Carolina, which later became the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The Parkway Playhouse, for many years, was operated as a summer stock venue and a sponsored extension of the drama departments at UNC-G and the University of Miami.

Yancey County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population was 17,774. Its county seat is Burnsville. This land was in inhabited by the Cherokee prior to European settlement. The Appalachian Mountains region belonged to the Cherokee Indians.

Murphy Branch

The historically important Murphy Branch is the western most part of what was the Western North Carolina Railroad, later the Richmond and Danville, Southern Railway and today the Norfolk Southern Railway. The branch runs between Asheville, North Carolina in the east and Andrews in the west. It roughly follows Interstate 40 and the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway. The railroad branch was constructed with convict labor between 1881 and 1894.
