Anamoose was established along the main line of the Soo Line Railroad in 1898 by Romanians who had come from Saskatchewan, Canada. The name is a corruption of the Chippewa word uhnemoosh, which means "female dog."

According to the book published in 1981 on the 75th anniversary of the town's incorporation as a city in 1906, Harvey, ND is believed to have been named for a director of the Soo Line Railway: Col. Scott William Harvey of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
