Taylor County, Texas

Taylor County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 131,506. It is included in the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its county seat is Abilene, Texas. Taylor is named for Edward Taylor, George Taylor, and James Taylor, three brothers who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Taylor County is considered part of West Texas.

Buffalo Gap, Texas

Buffalo Gap is an incorporated town in Taylor County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 463 at the 2000 census. It is the former county seat of Taylor County, having been supplanted in 1883 by the much larger Abilene to its north. Abilene won the referendum to be the county seat by a vote of 905-269. Buffalo Gap was settled at the site of a natural pass through which bison herds traveled.

Dyess Air Force Base

Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) is a United States Air Force base located approximately 7 miles southwest of Abilene, Texas. The host unit at Dyess is the 7th Bomb Wing (7 BW) assigned to the Air Combat Command Twelfth Air Force. The 7 BW is one of only two B-1B Lancer strategic bomber wings in the United States Air Force, the other being the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. Dyess AFB was established in 1942 as Abilene Army Air Base (AAB).

Wylie High School is a 3A public high school located in the far southern portion of Abilene, Texas, United States. In 2008, Wylie High School was named a National Blue Ribbon School In order to avoid confusion with the Wylie High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb of Wylie, the school is commonly referred to as Abilene Wylie. In 2011, the school was rated "Recognized" by the Texas Education Agency.
