Red River Army Depot

The Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is an 18,000-acre facility located 18 miles west of Texarkana, Texas in Bowie County. The facility has over 1,000,000 square feet of storage capacity. RRAD was activated in 1941 to create an ammunition storage facility. The depot was supposed to be deactivated after the findings of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission. However, the depot remained open after the commission changed its mind.

Bowie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the Texarkana, Texas - Texarkana, Arkansas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 92,565. Its legal county seat is Boston, though its courthouse is located in New Boston. Bowie is named for James Bowie, the legendary knife fighter who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Bowie County is one of 46 prohibition or entirely dry counties in the state of Texas.
