Gunt River

The Gunt is a red river in the south of Tajikistan. Its source, Lake Yashilkul, is situated at the edge of the Alichur Pamir, a high plateau or pamir at an elevation of 3720m. The city of Khorog is located at the confluence of the Gunt with the Panj River (the latter forming the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and also being known as Amu Darya, or in antiquity the Oxus). The Gunt, and its affluent Shahdara, power the Pamir I power plant.

Khorugh

The town of Khorugh, also transliterated as Khoroq, Khorogh, Khorog, or Xoroq is the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province (GBAO) in Tajikistan. It is also the capital of the Shughnon District of Gorno-Badakhshan. It has a population of 28,000 (2000 census). Khorugh is situated 2,200 m above sea level in the Pamir Mountains at the confluence of the Ghund and Panj rivers.

Khorog Airport

Khorog Airport is an airport serving Khorugh (also spelled Khorugh), a city in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province in Tajikistan. Due to difficult weather conditions, flights are canceled frequently. Until 2001 the city of Murghab was served from Khorog. Due to insufficient demand, this connection has been canceled.

Mayakovskiy Peak

Mayakovskiy Peak is a peak in Pamir Mountains, in the extreme south-west corner of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, where the north-south Ishkoshim Range joins the east-west Shakhdara Range. Elevation 6,096 m. Discovered in the early 1930s by Soviet explorer Luknitskiy, who gave it a figurative name, Three-Headed Peak. After the first ascent by Soviet alpinists in 1947, the peak was renamed in honor of the Soviet Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovskiy (1893-1930).
