Alexandria Ariana

The third largest Afghan city, Herat, is the city's modern name. In 330BC the Greek armies of Alexander, moved the capital of the satrap of Aria from Artacoana to the site of Herat. In doing this he expanded an existing Persian fortress. Pliny places it on the river Arias and Eratosthenes places it nearby, while Ptolemy places it near a Lake Arius.
