Juma Mosque of Ganja (Shah Abbas)
Juma Mosque of Ganja or Friday Mosque of Ganja – is a mosque located in the centre of Ganja. The mosque was built in 1606, according to a project of Sheykh Baheddin Mohammad Amil. The mosque is also often called “Shah Abbas Mosque”, because it was built on the instructions of Shah Abbas the Great during his reign. In 1776, two minarets were attached to the mosque. The mosque was built of red brick, which was traditional for Ganja.

Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city with a population of around 313,300. It was named Elisabethpol in the Russian Empire period. The city regained its original name—Ganja— in 1920 during the first part of its incorporation into the Soviet Union. However, its name was changed again in 1935 to Kirovabad and retained it throughout the later Soviet period from 1935. Finally in 1989, during the Perestroika, the city regained the original name.

The 1990 Tbilisi–Agdam bus bombing, also known as 1990 Khanlar bus bombing occurred on August 10, 1990 in the vicinity of Khanlar (now Goygol) when an explosive devise blew up in a bus 12.5 km away from Ganja, Azerbaijan's second largest city.

Formerly known as Khanlar, the region was renamed "Goygol" after Lake Goygol, the famous blue lake, by the decision of the Parliament of Azerbaijan on April 25, 2008. The administrative center of the rayon is the city of Goygol. The city of Goygol was founded as the German settlement of Helenendorf in 1819 and was renamed as Khanlar (Xanlar) in 1938.
