Lake Rabisha

Lake Rabisha (Bulgarian: Рабишко езеро, Rabishko ezero) is the largest inland natural freshwater lake in Bulgaria. It is located in northwestern Bulgaria, between the villages of Rabisha and Tolovitsa in Belogradchik municipality, Vidin Province. The lake is abundant in fish. There are sheatfishes that can reach 300 kilograms of weight. The lake is near the famous Magura Cave, which is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria.

Magura Cave

The Magura Cave (from Arumanian magura= hill) is located in north-western Bulgaria close to the village of Rabisha, at 18 km from the town of Belogradchik in the Vidin Province. The total length of the Magura cave is 2,5 km. The largest inland lake in the country, the Rabisha Lake, is situated in the vicinity of the cave and the whole region has been declared a natural landmark. Bones from different prehistoric species like cave bear or cave hyena have been discovered in the Magura Cave.

Makresh

Makresh is a village in northwestern Bulgaria, part of Vidin Province. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Makresh Municipality, which lies in the western part of Vidin Province, close to the Bulgarian-Serbian border. Makresh is situated 35 kilometres from the provincial capital Vidin, in the westernmost Danubian Plain, with the western reaches of the Balkan Mountains to its west.

Vidin Province

Vidin Province is the northwesternmost province of Bulgaria. It borders Serbia to the west and Romania to the northeast. Its administrative centre is the city of Vidin on the Danube river. The area is divided into 11 municipalities. As of December 2009, the province has a population of 108,067 inhabitants. There are remains of many castles, some of which are Baba Vida, one of the last Bulgarian strongholds during the Ottoman invasion and the Belogradchik fortress.
