M'pozo River

The M'pozo is a river in the province of Bas-Congo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its source is located in Angola. The river ends on the left bank of the Congo River, a few kilometres upstream of Matadi. The river is especially known for the lower part of its course and for its canyon, which is used by the Matadi–Kinshasa Railway, and which constituted the principal difficulty during the construction of this railway line at the end of the 19th century.

Matadi

Matadi is the chief sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of the Bas-Congo province. It has a population of 245,862 (2004). Matadi is situated on the left bank of the Congo River 148 km from the mouth and 8 km below the last navigable point before rapids make the river impassable for a long stretch upriver. It was founded by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879.
