Oni, Georgia

Oni is a town in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region, Georgia. Historically and ethnographically, it is part of Racha, a historic highland province in western Georgia. The town also serves as an administrative center of the Oni district. Oni is situated in a deep gorge on the left bank of Rioni River, some 830 m above sea level and 210 km northwest of Georgia’s capital Tbilisi.

Gebi

Gebi is an old village in the northern part of Georgian republic, in the region of Racha. From the northern slopes of Caucasus Gebi is bordered by Russia. Gebi with other two villages (Chiora, Glola) creates one ethno-cultural area, called Mtaracha . Gebi covers a territory of 355 km².

Kvaisa

Kvaisi or Kvaisa is an urban-type settlement (promoted to the city by the South Ossetian government in 2007) in the Dzau district of South Ossetia, Georgia. According to the official subdivision of Georgia it is in the Oni district of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region of Georgia. First city major - Chermen Gagiev. Now city major - Inal Zaharovich Ostaev (Russian: Инал Захарович Остаев).

1991 Racha earthquake

The 1991 Racha earthquake occurred in the province of Racha, Georgia at 9:12 UTC on 29 April. Centered on the districts of Oni and Ambrolauri on the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus mountains, it killed 270, left approximately 100,000 homeless and caused severe damage, including to several medieval monuments. It had a magnitude of 7.0 and was the most powerful earthquake recorded in the Caucasus.
