Scharnebeck twin ship lift

The Scharnebeck twin ship lift is on the Elbe-Seitenkanal, which connects the Elbe and the Mittellandkanal. The boat lift was built in Scharnebeck to the North-east of Lüneburg in 1974 and was at that time the largest ship lift in the world. The first ship passed through the lift on 1975-12-05. There is a museum at the site which can be visited by walkers.

Elbmarsch

Elbmarsch is a Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the southern (left) bank of the river Elbe, approx. 30 km southeast of Hamburg, and 20 km north of Lüneburg. Its seat is in the village Marschacht. The name refers to the marshes along the Elbe. The Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch consists of the following municipalities: Drage Marschacht Tespe

Lüne Abbey

Lüne Abbey is an abbey in Lüneburg, in the German state of Lower Saxony, which was originally built for Benedictine nuns and today is home to a chapter of Lutheran conventuals. It is one of several former monasteries administered by the Hanoverian monastic chamber (Klosterkammer Hannover).

Elbe Marshes

The Elbe marshes are an extensive region of marsh or polderland along the lower and middle reaches of the River Elbe in northern Germany. It is also referred to as the Lower Elbe Marsch by Dickinson and is region D24 in the BfN's list of the natural regions of Germany. The Germans refer to these polders as Marschen . Originally this flat strip of land along the Elbe was completely tidal.
