Peenemünde Airfield

Peenemünde Airfield is an airfield along the Baltic Sea north of Peenemünde, Germany. Today round trips in light aircraft take place from Peenemünde Airfield. Bus tours are also available, on which one can visit the former shelters of the NVA and the remnants of the of the V-1 flying bomb facilities. Because of its long runway the airfield Peenemünde is also a location for flight schools.

Operation Hydra (1943)

Operation Hydra was a Royal Air Force attack on the Peenemünde Army Research Center on the night of 17/18 August 1943. It began the Operation Crossbow strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany's V-weapon programme. At a cost of 215 British aircrew members, 40 bombers, and hundreds of civilian deaths in a nearby concentration camp; the air raid killed 2 V-2 rocket scientists and delayed V-2 rocket test launches for seven weeks.

Peenemünde Army Research Center

The Peenemünde Army Research Center was founded in 1937 as one of five military proving grounds under the Army Weapons Office. It is the birthplace of modern rocketry - and thus, in a broader sense, also the origin of aerospace engineering. On April 2, 1936, the Reich Air Ministry paid 750,000 reichsmarks to the town of Wolgast for the whole Northern peninsula of the Baltic island of Usedom. The site had been suggested by Wernher von Braun's mother as 'just the place for you and your friends'.

Battle of Wolgast

The Battle of Wolgast was an engagement in the Thirty Years' War, fought on 22 August (O.S. ) or 2 September (N.S. ) 1628 near Wolgast, Duchy of Pomerania, Germany. Danish forces of Christian IV of Denmark had made landfall on Usedom and the adjacent mainland, and expelled the imperial occupation forces. An Imperial army commanded by Albrecht von Wallenstein left besieged Stralsund to confront Christian IV. Ultimately, the Danish forces were defeated.
