Belawan

Belawan is a port city on the northeast coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Located on the Deli River near the city of Medan, Belawan is Indonesia's busiest port outside of Java. A regular ferry service connects Belawan to across the Strait of Malacca to Penang, Malaysia; at times a ferry has also run from Belawan to Satun, Thailand. The port was initially built in 1890, to provide a location where tobacco could be transferred directly between rail lines from the interior and deep-draft ships.

Mandala Airlines Flight 091

Mandala Airlines Flight 091 was a scheduled domestic flight that originated from Polonia International Airport in Medan, Indonesia to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. On 5 September 2005, the flight crashed into a heavily-populated residential area seconds after taking off in Medan. There were 153 fatalities. Dozens of houses and cars were destroyed, and at least 49 people are reported to have perished on the ground.

HMS Shalimar (P242)

HMS Shalimar was an S class submarine of the Royal Navy, and part of the Third Group built of that class. She was built at Chatham Dockyard and launched on April 22, 1943. So far she has been the only ship of the Royal Navy to bear the name Shalimar. She spent most of her wartime career in the Far East, where she caused significant losses amongst enemy shipping.

Istana Maimun

Istana Maimun Palace is a well-known landmark at Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. Built by the Kesultanan of Deli, Sultan Makmun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah in years 1887–1891, the palace covers 2,772 m² and has 30 rooms. The Palace has become a tourist destination not solely because of age but also because of the unique interior design of the palace, mixing elements of Malay cultural heritage, Islam, Spanish, Indian, and Italian style.
