Majnoon oil field

Majnoon oil field is a super-giant oil field located 60 km from Basra, Basra Governorate in southern Iraq. Majnoon is one of the richest oil fields in the world with an estimated 23-25 billion and proven reserves of 12.6 billion of barrels of oil in place. The field was named Majnoon which means crazy in Arabic in reference to excessive amount of oil in a dense area.

Majnoon Island

Majnoon Island is an island in southern Iraq near Al-Qurnah that is a center for oil production of the Majnoon Oilfield. The area was built out of sand dunes and mud to create pathways for oil pipelines. Before the Gulf War, roughly a sixth of Iraq's oil reserves, some 7 million barrels, passed through this island. Production quickly recovered after the site was a center of fighting in the Iran-Iraq War, particularly Operation Kheibar in 1984.

Battle of Rumaila

The Battle of Rumaila, also known as the Battle of the Causeway or the Battle of the Junkyard, was a controversial engagement that took place on March 2, 1991, near the Rumaila oil field in the Euphrates Valley of southern Iraq, when the U.S. Army forces, mostly the 24th Infantry Division under Maj. Gen. Barry McCaffrey, engaged and nearly annihilated a large column of withdrawing Iraqi Republican Guard armored forces during the immediate aftermath of the Gulf War.
