Scordia Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield in Italy, which was located approximately 1 km north of Scordia in Sicily. It was an all-weather temporary field built by the XII Engineer Command using a graded earth compacted surface, with a prefabricated hessian (burlap) surfacing known as PHS. PHS was made of an asphalt-impregnated jute which was rolled out over the compacted surface over a square mesh track (SMT) grid of wire joined in 3-inch squares.

The 1169 Sicily earthquake occurred on 4 February at 07:00 on the eve of the feast of St. Agatha. It had an estimated magnitude of between 6.4 and 7.3 and an estimated maximum perceived intensity of X (Intense) on the Mercalli intensity scale. Catania, Lentini and Modica were severely damaged. It triggered a tsunami. Overall, the earthquake is estimated to have caused the deaths of at least 15,000 people.
