Lichtenvoorde

Lichtenvoorde is a town in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Oost Gelre. Until 1 January 2005, Lichtenvoorde was an independent municipality. It includes also four small villages: Lievelde, Zieuwent, Vragender and Harreveld. The number of inhabitants in this municipality is about 20,000. The people from Lichtenvoorde are known as the keienslöppers (boulder haulers). The name is derived from a huge boulder at the marketplace with a stone lion on top. These are the symbols of the village.

Varsseveld

Varsseveld is a town in the Netherlands, located in the Dutch municipality of Oude IJsselstreek. It is the hometown of football coach Guus Hiddink, and of cyclist Robert Gesink. Varsseveld was a separate municipality between 1812 and 1818, when it was merged with Wisch.

Zwarte Cross

The Zwarte Cross Festival is the biggest paid festival in the Netherlands, and the biggest motor event in the world. The 15th edition in 2011 had 152,500 visitors. The festival is a combination of motorcross, music, theatre and stunts. 'Zwarte Cross' literally means 'black cross'; it is a reference to the illegal motor races in the 1960s.

Aalten

Aalten is a municipality and a village in the eastern Netherlands. The former municipalities of Bredevoort (1818) and Dinxperlo (2005) have been merged with Aalten. Notable inhabitants of Aalten include Angus Young, guitarist of the Australian rock band AC/DC, and Robert Gesink, a professional road bicycle racer. During World War II, 51 of Aalten's 85 Jews were hidden by local non-Jews, and thereby survived the war.
