Varsseveld

Varsseveld is a town in the Netherlands, located in the Dutch municipality of Oude IJsselstreek. It is the hometown of football coach Guus Hiddink, and of cyclist Robert Gesink. Varsseveld was a separate municipality between 1812 and 1818, when it was merged with Wisch.

Achterhoek

The Achterhoek is a region in the eastern part of the Netherlands, Europe. Its name (meaning "rear-corner") is geographically appropriate because the area lies in the Eastern-most part of Gelderland, and therefore of the Netherlands, protruding into Germany. The Achterhoek area lies between the rivers IJssel and Oude IJssel, and the borders with the province of Overijssel and Germany the former region of Zutphen County.

IJzevoorde

IJzevoorde is a small village in the province of Gelderland in the east part of the Netherlands. The name literally means Iron Ford. It has about 30 inhabitants and buildings include a school, a kindergarten, a gym, a bar and a small stage. The school has about 60 students and there are a lot of farmers' children attending the school. IJzevoorde also has a small campground. Close to IJzevoorde lies the castle of "Slangenburg", referring to a little river called the Slinge.

Slangenburg Castle

Slangenburg Castle is a castle in the municipality of Doetinchem in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. The castle is located in the forest of the same name between the towns of Varsseveld and Doetinchem, about 5 kilometers from the latter. Slangenburg Castle was constructed in the Late Medieval period. In the 17th century the castle became the property of General Frederik Johan van Baer, also known as General Slangenburg, who rebuilt it for residential purposes.

St. Willibrord's Abbey

St. Willibrord's Abbey at Doetinchem in Gelderland is the most recently established Benedictine monastery in the Netherlands. The monastery, dedicated to Saint Willibrord, was founded immediately after World War II by the over-populated Oosterhout Abbey. Initially the monks lived in Slangenburg Castle, which they partially restored. In the 1950s they succeeded in building a new monastery on part of the castle estate.
