West Melton in New Zealand has the largest population in the Selwyn District of Canterbury, New Zealand due to a high density of farms and lifestyle blocks. It has long been associated with horse racing (trotting), arable land, and sheep farming. Recently, it has become associated with wine growing and deer farming. West Melton Aerodrome is located in the area. The usually resident population has increased from 4,133 in 1996 to 5,613 for the 2006 census.

R. F. Joyce Observatory

R. F. Joyce Observatory is the home observatory of the Canterbury Astronomical Society (CAS) and is situated near West Melton, Christchurch, New Zealand. The observatory is the result of the bequest of R. F. Joyce, a founding member and former President of the CAS. The primary instruments in use are a 14.5" Cassegrain telescope, a 12" Schmidt-Cassegrain, a 16" folded Newtonian and a 5" refractor (on loan from Carter Observatory).

Rolleston, New Zealand

Rolleston is a town in the Selwyn District of Canterbury, New Zealand. It is located next to State Highway 1, 22 kilometres south-west of Christchurch on the Canterbury Plains in the South Island of New Zealand. The town uses the slogan "The Town of the Future". The Selwyn District Council has its headquarters in the town. Rolleston originated as a railway terminus in 1866, and is named after the Canterbury statesman William Rolleston.

Aylesbury, New Zealand

Aylesbury is a settlement in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Aylesbury is notable for the railway station which blew away in the storms of 1976. There is currently a shingle pit in the making. The epicentre of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Sept 4, 2010 was very close to Aylesbury and the largest land surface fractures were in this locality.

Templeton, New Zealand

Templeton is a small town on the outskirts of Christchurch but part of the Selwyn District. It lies on State Highway 1. It has been the centre of harness racing in Canterbury with many famous names such as Devine, Nyan, Butt, Jones and Carmichael among its people. Its European history goes to over 140 years when it was a watering point for horses between Christchurch and the Selwyn River.
