Whangara

Whangara is a small community in the northeast of New Zealand's North Island. Located between Gisborne and Tolaga Bay, five kilometres southwest of Gable End Foreland and 2 km east of State Highway 35, it features prominently in the early history of the Ngāti Porou iwi. Whangara was the location and setting for the successful New Zealand novel and film Whale Rider.

Te Kani-a-Takirau

Te Kani-a-Takirau was a notable New Zealand tribal leader. Of Māori descent, he identified with Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti of the Ngati Porou iwi. He was born in on the East Coast of New Zealand. He is well known for having refused to sign the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
