The station is located on Dovrebanen and served regional trains with one departure southwards to Hamar and one north to Åndalsnes each day. During the military campaign in Norway in 1940, Kvam was the scene of a large military action between German and British soldiers. The place has a British military cemetery and its own railway station. Its population was 832 in 2006.

Sjoa
The Sjoa river provides the outlet from lake Gjende at Gjendesheim in the Jotunheimen mountains of Norway's Jotunheim National Park. South of the village Randsverk it flows through Ridderspranget — a ravine named after a Norwegian myth.
