Rya Tunnel

The Rya Tunnel (Norwegian: Ryaforbindelsen or Ryatunnelen) is a subsea road tunnel which links the island of Kvaløya to the Malangshalvøya peninsula. Located along Norwegian County Road 858, the tunnel runs under Straumsfjorden between the villages of Larseng and Balsnes. The 2,675-metre long tunnel reaches a maximum depth of 87 metres below mean sea level and has a maximum grade of 7.8%.

Kvaløya (Tromsø)

Kvaløya (Northern Sami: Sállir; lit. "Whale Island") is an island in the Norwegian municipality of Tromsø. It has an area of 737 square kilometres, making it the fifth largest island in mainland Norway. It is connected to the neighboring island of Tromsøya to the east by the Sandnessund Bridge, to Ringvassøya to the north by the sub-sea Kvalsund Tunnel, to Sommarøy to the west by the Sommarøy Bridge, and to the mainland to the south by the Rya Tunnel.

Operation Catechism

Operation Catechism was the last of nine attempts to sink or sabotage the Kriegsmarine battleship Tirpitz during World War II. On November 12, 1944, the RAF Bomber Command dispatched 30 Avro Lancaster heavy bombers from No. 9 Squadron RAF and No. 617 Squadron RAF (including a film unit aircraft from No. 463 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force) from RAF Lossiemouth to the Tirpitz's mooring in Tromsø, Norway; each one equipped with a Tallboy bomb.

Malangen Church

Malangen Church is a parish church in the municipality of Balsfjord in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the village of Mortenhals. The church is part of the Malangen parish in the Indre Troms deanery in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white wooden church was built in 1853 and was consecrated on 31 August 1853. The church seats about 280 people.

Malangen (fjord)

Malangen or Malangsfjorden is a fjord in the municipalities of Balsfjord, Lenvik, Målselv, and Tromsø in Troms county, Norway. The fjord runs southeast between the islands of Senja and Kvaløya and further into the mainland on the border between Balsfjord and Lenvik municipalities. The 60-kilometre long fjord stretches from Hekkingen Lighthouse off the coast of Senja to the village of Nordfjordbotn.
