Panaon Island is a small island in the Philippines, in the province of Southern Leyte. It lies south of Leyte, separated from Dinagat to the east, and Mindanao to the southeast by Surigao Strait. The Mindanao Sea lies to the southwest. Panaon is about 30 km long from north to south. The largest town is Liloan, which is connected by a bridge called the 'Wawa bridge' to the main Leyte Island. Liloan is located at the northern part of Panaon Island which is connected to the main island of Leyte by a bridge (wawa bridge). Across from Liloan is the province of Southern Leyte. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 27,000 people in 14,135 households. "Liloan" is derived from the local term for whirlpool, which is "lilo".
