2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl air disaster

The Lokomotiv Yaroslavl air disaster occurred at 16:05 MT on Wednesday, 7 September 2011, when a Yak-Service Yakovlev Yak-42, carrying the players and coaching staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team, crashed near the Russian city of Yaroslavl. The aircraft ran off the runway before lifting off, failed to gain altitude, struck a tower mast, caught fire and crashed 2 km from Tunoshna Airport. Of the 45 on board, 43 died at the scene.

Tunoshna Airport

Tunoshna (also Tunoshnoye, or Tunoschna) is an airport in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia located 18 km southeast of Yaroslavl. It services medium-sized airliners. During the Cold War it was a key interceptor aircraft base. It was home to 415 IAP (415th Interceptor Aviation Regiment) flying MiG-23P aircraft during the 1980s and 1990s. This unit was decommissioned in 1992 and the planes were sent to Rzhev.

Church of St. Nicholas in Tropino

The Church of St. Nicholas in Tropino (Николо-Тропинская церковь) is a ruined 17th-century church on the right bank of the Kotorosl River in Yaroslavl. It has been expanded and renovated on several occasions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The site used to be prone to seasonal flooding. A memorial cross near the church marked the spot where Patriarch Nikon expired in August 1681. What remains of the old building is currently used for storing fish.

Fyodorovskaya Church

The Fyodorovskaya Church (Фёдоровская церковь) is a penticupolar parish Russian Orthodox church built by ordinary parishioners on the right bank of the Kotorosl River in Yaroslavl between 1682 and 1687. It is dedicated to Theotokos Feodorovskaya, a miraculous icon from nearby Kostroma. The building is notable as the first church in the region to be returned by the Soviets to the Russian Orthodox Church (in 1987).
