Battle of Tarutino

The Battle of Tarutino was a part of Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The battle is sometimes called the Battle of Vinkovo or the Battle of Chernishnya after the local river. Many historians claim that the latter name is more fitting because the village of Tarutino was 8 km from the described events. In the battle Russian troops under the command of Bennigsen defeated French troops under the command of Joachim Murat.

UNK proton accelerator

The UNK proton accelerator was a large particle accelerator under construction in Protvino, near Moscow, Russia, at the Institute for High Energy Physics. While progress in construction was announced in 1996, after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the economic changes in the country, government funding to the project was halted and only security and maintenance are funded.

Protva River

Protva River is a river in Moscow and Kaluga Oblasts in Russia, left tributary of the Oka. The length of the river is 282 km. The area of its basin is 4,620 km². The Protva freezes up in early December and stays icebound until early April. Its main tributary is the Luzha River. The towns of Vereya, Borovsk, Protvino and Obninsk are located on the shores of the Protva River.
