Smolensk South Airport is an airport in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located 4 km south of the city of Smolensk that is no longer in use. It is a civilian airfield with a small tarmac. Sneberka

Sneberka is a rural locality in Monastyrshchinsky District of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located 52 kilometers from the border with Belarus. Population: 14 (2007 est.). The area of the village is 0.36 square kilometers . During World War II, in July 1941, Sneberka was occupied by German troops. The Soviet army liberated the village in September 1943. Pochinok railway station is close to the village.

Gnezdovo

Gnezdovo or Gnyozdovo is an archeological site located near the village of Gnyozdovo in Smolensk Oblast, Russia. The site contains extensive remains of a Slavic-Varangian settlement that flourished in the 10th century as a major trade station on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks.

Katyn massacre

The Katyn massacre, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyńska, mord katyński, 'Katyń crime'; Russian: Катынский расстрел Katynskij ra'sstrel 'Katyn shooting'), was a mass execution of Polish nationals carried out by the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, the Soviet secret police, in April and May 1940. The massacre was prompted by Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps, dated 5 March 1940.

Battle of Smolensk (1943)

The second Battle of Smolensk (7 August–2 October 1943) was a Soviet strategic offensive operation conducted by the Red Army as part of the Summer-Autumn Campaign of 1943. Staged almost simultaneously with the Lower Dnieper Offensive (13 August–22 September), the offensive lasted two months and was led by Generals Andrei Yeremenko commanding the Kalinin Front and Vasily Sokolovsky commanding the Western Front. Its goal was to clear the German presence from the Smolensk and Bryansk regions.
