Orava (reservoir)

Orava is a reservoir in northernmost Slovakia, which is the largest lake in Slovakia (35.2 km²). It has been constructed between 1941 and 1953 as a dam built on the former two sources of the Orava river. Several former villages had to be inundated for this purpose. Probably the best known of them was Slanica, the birthplace of the Slovak intellectual and cleric Anton Bernolák (Antonius Bernolacius). Today, the reservoir is protected by the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area.

Bird Island, Slovakia, Šamorín

Bird Island is a small island (6.86 hectares) in the Hrušovská zdrž (2518 ha), which is part of Gabčíkovo Reservoir, south-west of Šamorín, Slovakia. The island was built because of the constructions of the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros dams on the Danube as habitat compensation for areas consequently flooded. The island is part of proposed special protected areas Dunajské luhy for waterbirds.

Wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians

Carpathian Wooden Churches is the name of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that consists of nine wooden religious buildings constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries in eight different locations in Slovakia. They include two Roman Catholic, three Protestant and three Greek Catholic churches plus one belfry in Hronsek.

Namestovo church

The Namestovo church was built somewhere between 1655 to 1658. It was a chapel which now serves as an entry to the church. Later it was rebuilt and enlarged several times, after a great fire at the end of the 18th century. The first Namestovo church's pastor was Ján Neborovini, later Štefan Boczko ascended his post, who have performed here to year 1672 and was disconolately engaged in Piko's rebellion. Then he fled before punishment to Transylvania.
