The Boipatong massacre took place on the night of 17 June 1992 in the township of Boipatong, South Africa. The attack on township residents was carried out by armed men from the steelworks residence KwaMadala Hostel, which was located roughly 1 km from the township. Roughly 40 people died and several were maimed. The attackers were supporters of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), rival party of the African National Congress (ANC).

The lake behind the dam wall has a surface area of about 320 square kilometres and is 47 meters deep. The Vaal Dam lies on the Vaal River, which is one of South Africa's strongest-flowing rivers. It has over 800 kilometres of shoreline and is South Africa's second biggest dam by area and the fourth largest by volume.
