Before the present Hemse church was built there was a stave church from the early Christian period in the beginning of 11th century. Lojsta Castle

Lojsta Castle (Lojsta slott) was, despite what the name suggests, not a "castle" in the normal sense, i.e. it was not a palacelike manor. It was more of a fortress. In the Middle Ages, Lojsta Castle was a defence-structure, placed on an island in a small lake in the middle of the Swedish island Gotland. The fortress is believed to have been used by the Vitalians who supported the captured Swedish king at the time, Albert of Mecklenburg.

The Burgsvik Formation comprises two members, the Burgsvik Sandstone (on which this article focusses) and Burgsvik Oolite.
