Azaz

Azaz is a small town in Syria, roughly 20 miles (30 kilometres) north-northwest of Aleppo. It is notable for its proximity to a Syrian–Turkish border post and is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Azaz between the Crusader States and the Seljuk Turks on June 11, 1125.

Azaz District

Arpad, Syria

Arpad was an ancient Aramaean city located in north-western Syria, north of Aleppo. It became the capital of Aramaean state of Bet-Gus established by Gus of Yahan in the 9th century BC. Bet-Gus stretched from the A'zaz area in the north to Hamath in the south. Arpad later became a major vassal city of the Kingdom of Urartu. In 743 BC, during the Urartu-Assyria War, the Neo-Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III laid siege to Arpad following the defeat of the Urartuan army of Sarduri II at Samsat.

Church of Saint Simeon Stylites

The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is a historical building located about 30 km (19 mi) northwest of Aleppo, Syria. It is the oldest surviving Byzantine church, dating back to the 5th century. Built on the site of the pillar of St. Simeon Stylites, a famed hermit monk, the church is popularly known as either Qalaat Semaan, the 'Fortress of Simeon', or Deir Semaan, the 'Monastery of Simeon' .

Simeon Stylites

Saint Simeon Stylites or Symeon the Stylite (c. 390 – 2 September 459) was a Christian ascetic saint who achieved fame for living 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar near Aleppo in Syria. Several other stylites later followed his model (the Greek word style means pillar). He is known formally as Saint Simeon Stylites the Elder to distinguish him from Simeon Stylites the Younger and Simeon Stylites III.
