Chaguaramas, Trinidad

Chaguaramas lies in the North West Peninsula of Trinidad west of Port of Spain; the name is often applied to the entire peninsula, but is sometimes used to refer to the most developed area. The entire peninsula was leased to the United States in 1940 for the construction of a naval base under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement. The base was also used during the early 1960s as a BMEWS early warning radar site, as well as serving as a missile tracking site on the U.S.

Carenage

Carenage is a community in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is located in northwestern Trinidad, and is administered by the Diego Martin Regional Corporation. Located close to Chaguaramas, it is more of a residential area than a commercial or industrial locale. The name is derived from the practice of "careening" (i.e. , beaching) sailing vessels for maintenance, which had been done in the area for many years.

Diego Martin

Diego Martin is a town in northwestern Trinidad, just north-west of the capital Port of Spain and east of Carenage. The Diego Martin Valley in the Northern Range was once filled with a number of small villages but is now a densely populated area. It was named after a Spanish explorer Don Diego Martín. The area was first settled by French planters and their slaves in the 1780s.

Carrera Island

Carrera Island is one of the Five Islands in the Gulf of Paria, Trinidad and Tobago. Situated off the northwest peninsula of Trinidad. The islet comprises approximately 20 acres . When Trinidad was under Spanish rule, Carrera Island was known as Isla Carrera. Since the late 19th century, Carrera has been in use as a prison island.

Gasparillo Island

Gasparillo (Spanish for "Little Gasparee") is a small island in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is one of the "Bocas Islands" (also referred to as Dragons' Teeth), which lie in the Bocas del Dragón (Spanish for Dragons' Mouth) between the main island of Trinidad and Venezuela. The island is currently uninhabited.
