1953 Yenice-Gönen earthquake

The 1953 Yenice-Gönen earthquake occurred at 21:06 local time (19:06 UTC on March 18, in the province of Çanakkale and Balıkesir in the Marmara Region at western Turkey. It had a magnitude 7.5 on the surface wave magnitude scale and a maximum felt intensity of IX on the Mercalli intensity scale. It caused widespread damage, killing 1070 and causing damage that was estimated at US$3,570,000 repair value.

Battle of the Granicus

The Battle of the Granicus River in May 334 BC was the first of three major battles fought between Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. Fought in Northwestern Asia Minor, near the site of Troy, it was here that Alexander defeated the forces of the Persian satraps of Asia Minor, including a large force of Greek mercenaries led by Memnon of Rhodes. The battle took place on the road from Abydos to Dascylium, at the crossing of the Granicus River.

Biga, Çanakkale

Biga is a town and district of Çanakkale Province in the Marmara region of Turkey. It is located on the Biga River, 90 km northeast from Çanakkale city centre. According to the 2000 census, population of the district is 80,982 of which 37,196 live in the town of Biga. The district covers an area of 1,354 km, and the town lies at an elevation of 21 m . The center of COMU Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences is in Biga.
