Duga-3 (western) receiver

Duga-3 ("duga" means "arc") or "Steel Yard" was a Soviet experimental over-the-horizon radar (OTH) system. It was developed for the Soviet ABM early-warning network. The system operated from 1976 to 1989. Two stations of Duga-3 were installed: a western system around Chernobyl and an eastern system in Siberia. The receiver for the western Duga-3 was located about 50 km northeast of Chernobyl (just west of Chernihiv, south of Gomel).

Liubech

Liubech or Lyubech is a small ancient town (first mentioned in 882) connected with many important events since the times of the Kievan Rus'. It is currently a small settlement (2,600 inhabitants – 2001) located in Ripky Raion, in the Chernihiv Oblast (province) of northern Ukraine. Liubech is 250 kilometers north of the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, and located near the Russian border.

Loyew

Loyew,; or Loyev,; is a city in the Belarusian province of Homiel and the administrative centre of Loyew Raion. The population is 7,500 (2001). The settlement is located along the right coast of the Dnepr at its confluence with the Sozh. Loyew arose on the site of an ancient settlement of dregovichs; the first mention of the settlement goes back to 1505. The city is known for the battle of Loev of July 31, 1649 during the Khmelnytsky Uprising.

Sozh River

Sozh is an international river flowing in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. It is a left bank tributary of the Dnieper River. Sozh passes through Gomel, the second largest city in Belarus. The river is crossed by the Sozh Floating Bridge at Korma and an elegant steel arch at Gomel, which is featured on a national stamp of 300 ruble value.
