Golden Hill Fort

Golden Hill Fort was a defensible barracks built as part of the Palmerston defences by the 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom to provide manpower to man the defences at the western end of the Isle of Wight, England. Built in hexagonal form, it accommodated 8 officers and 128 men, and had its own hospital. The Fort is a local landmark which is in a very prominent position overlooking much of the land looking south towards Afton Down.

Western Yar

The River Yar on the Isle of Wight, England, rises near the beach at Freshwater Bay, on the south coast of the island and flows only a few miles north to Yarmouth, on the north coast, where it meets the Solent. Most of the river is a tidal estuary. Its headwaters have been truncated by erosion of the south coast. The Yar estuary is part of the Isle of Wight’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which stretches from Afton Marsh Local Nature Reserve to Yarmouth.

Freshwater (Isle of Wight) railway station

This article is about a defunct station on the Isle of Wight, not the similarly named station on the Skyrail & Kuranda Scenic Railway in Cairns, Australia. Freshwater railway station, was the westerly terminus and largest station of the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway, the platform being extended to accommodate the “Tourist Train”, a non-stop service from Ventnor.

West Wight Sports Centre

West Wight Sports Centre is a private/charity run sport and leisure complex in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. It hosts numerous events as well as its ordinary functions, such events include the SNAP ("Say No And Phone") Nights as well as the West Wight Triathlon. It employs more than 50 full and part time staff making it one of the largest employers in the West Wight. It is also a stop off station for events including the Randonnee.
