West Yatton Down is a 14.4 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1971. The site is an example of unimproved limestone grassland. Among the more notable plants species are Bastard-toadflax (Thesium humifusum), Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria), and Musk Orchid (Herminium monorchis).

Battle of Edington

At the Battle of Edington an army of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex under Alfred the Great defeated the Great Heathen Army led by Guthrum on a date between 6 and 12 May AD 878. The primary sources locate the battle at "Ethandun" or "Ethandune", and until a scholarly consensus identified its location with the present-day Edington in Wiltshire it was known as the Battle of Ethandun, a name which continues to be used. The battle soon resulted in the Treaty of Wedmore later the same year.
