Ballynoe, County Down

Ballynoe is a small settlement and townland south of Downpatrick in County Down, Northern Ireland. The main feature of note is Ballynoe Stone Circle, a large circle of over 50 closely spaced upright stones, surrounding a mound which, when excavated, was found to contain two cists in which cremated bones were found. The site is near the disused railway station, reached by a long footpath off the main road, at grid ref: J481404.

Ballynoe Stone Circle

Ballynoe Stone Circle is a stone circle situated in the small hamlet of Ballynoe 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is near the disused railway station, reached by a long footpath off the main road, at grid ref: J481404. It is a large and impressive circle lying in cultivated lowland, less than 100 ft above sea level, in the heart of the fertile Lecale peninsula.

Bright Castle

Bright Castle is a castle near Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is a three-storey Tower house which was probably built in the late 15th century or early 16th century. Less than half of the original structure survives. The east wall, about 6m long externally, and adjoining fragments of the north and south walls stand to roof level but the western portion of the castle has completely disappeared. There are some indications that there may have been a vault above the ground floor.

Downpatrick Racecourse

Downpatrick Racecourse, located one mile from the town of Downpatrick in County Down, is one of the two horse racing courses in Northern Ireland, the other being Down Royal. The first race meeting at Downpatrick was held in 1685. Although Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, horse racing is run on an All Ireland basis, so Downpatrick falls under the aegis of Horse Racing Ireland rather than the British Horseracing Authority.
