1995 Palo Verde, Arizona derailment

The 1995 Palo Verde derailment took place on October 9, 1995, when Amtrak's Sunset Limited derailed near Palo Verde, Arizona on Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. The two locomotives and eight of the twelve cars derailed, four of them falling 30 feet (9 m) off a trestle bridge into a dry river bed. Mitchell Bates, a sleeping car attendant, was killed. 78 people were injured, 12 of them seriously.

Gillespie Dam

The Gillespie Dam is a concrete gravity dam located on the Gila River between the towns of Buckeye and Gila Bend, Arizona. The dam was constructed during the 1920s for primarily irrigation purposes. A portion of the dam failed unexpectedly in 1993 during unusually heavy rains.

Hassayampa, Arizona

Hassayampa is a place in Arizona on the both banks of the Hassayampa River along the Southern Pacific Railway. It was about four miles west of Palo Verde, Arizona, and slightly east of Dixie, Arizona, and Arlington, Arizona. Today it is on the route of W. Old Highway 80. It is a little west of S. 309th Avenue. In 1961 a landfill was opened in Hassayampa. The landfill is on the west side of the Hassayampa River.

Gila Bend Mountains

The Gila Bend Mountains are a 35-mile (56 km) long mountain range of the north-central Sonoran Desert southwest of Phoenix, Arizona and in southwest Maricopa County. The Gila River of New Mexico and Arizona transects the entire state of Arizona, and the watershed covers about 65% of Arizona. The famous Gila Bend of the river changes the west-southwest flow to south-flowing, then back to west-flowing.
