Canyon Lake (Arizona)

Canyon Lake is one of four reservoirs that were formed by the damming of the Salt River in the U.S. state of Arizona. The lake was formed by the Mormon Flat Dam, which was completed in 1925 after two years of construction. Canyon Lake, with a surface area of 950 acres, is the third and smallest of four lakes created along the Salt River. Two others, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake are upstream. The fourth, Saguaro Lake, is downstream.

Mormon Flat Dam

The Mormon Flat Dam is a dam on the Salt River located Northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The dam is 380 feet long, 224 feet high and was built between 1923-25. The Dam is named after nearby Mormon Flat, a place where LDS settlers from Utah stopped to camp. There are two hydroelectric generating units in the dam; rated at 10,000 and 50,000 kW. The dam forms the Canyon Lake as it slows the passage of the Salt River.

Weaver's Needle

Weaver's Needle is a 1,000-foot-high column of rock that forms a distinctive peak visible for many miles around. Located in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix, Arizona, Weaver's Needle was created when a thick layer of tuff (fused volcanic ash) was heavily eroded, creating the spire as an erosional remnant with a summit elevation of 4553 ft. It is set in a desert landscape of cactus and mesquite bush, with large Saguaro cacti particularly prominent.

The Peralta massacre was the alleged killing of a Mexican family by Apaches in about 1848. It is generally featured as an element of the legend of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. KVIT (90.7/92.7 FM, "The Goldmine") is a Phoenix metro area public radio station that plays Top 40, live and pre-recorded programming 24/7.
